20080809 Shipka monastery
Photo taken on August 09, 2008
You would expect this rather in Russia, than in Bulgaria! The explanation is that it was built as a dedication to soldiers who died at the nearby Shipka pass during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78). The ornate fairytale-like buiding, with it's glittering golden roof, looks centuries old, but was built in fact in 1902. You see the staircase to the side entrance, resembling the Basil's Cathedral (1555!), on the Red Square in Moscow (of which I have a paper cut model) 12 x 16 cm, fineliner + watercolor photo reference: www.flickr.com/photos/j_morais/1537369124/
